Series: Math in Nature (Book 3) Hardcover: 32 pages Publisher: Owlkids (September 10, 2013) ISBN-13: 978-1926973821 Summary Sizing Up Winter is a book that uses measurement as a way of describing nature. This book also uses critical thinking techniques to describe different aspects of nature. The book asks children if all snow flakes are shaped the same. The illustrator Ashley Barron is one of my favorite child illustrator. The images that are in the book are actually made up of a paper collage. I’m always impressed when I see her work. Sizing up Winter would be a great addition to the home library. This book would be good for children under the age of 6. Younger children will enjoy the story. However, some of the measuring concepts may be above their head. Professional Reviews From School Library JournalK-Gr 2–Using familiar animals such as cardinals, otters, and porcupines as well as the lesser-known snow fleas, musk oxen, and ptarmigans, Flatt takes readers on a mathematical, seasonal journey. Facts about the animals and the weather share space with measurement problems including distance, time, height, weight, length, area, and mass. The text, mostly in rhyming prose, and the accompanying math problems, which relate to the illustrations, can make for two separate reading experiences. Some sophisticated vocabulary (“capacity,” “analog”) makes this title better for adult/child sharing than independent reading. “Nature Notes” expand on the brief information about the animals highlighted in the text. Barron's full-page, cut-paper collages use a full palette of color and manage to instill subtle personality into the animals without sacrificing realism. Although most of the pictures show a snowy landscape, there is an acknowledgement that winter may look different depending on where one lives. CChildren who peruse the illustrations carefully and welcome the challenge of problem solving will enjoy this book.–Sara-Jo Lupo Sites, George F. So why not create some winter slime. Paper collage: After you read the book, talk with your child about creating a paper collage animal using newspaper. Cardinal Painting: As a mother of older children I miss the days of finger-painting. I have several paintings that I pull out and place on the refrigerator. Crystal making: This is one of those task that take several days. However, if your child is like mine they will check on the progress daily.
